There are some things that every American law student confronts head on. The infamous Rule is one such thing. The Rule Against Perpetuities is an artifact of English common law that has lived on longer than the period that it defines as a limit for contingent future interests. I don’t know if it’s even worth trying to translate such a thing into laymen’s terms. In fact, I don’t really think I could find a better way to say “a life in being plus 21 years.” Suffice it to say, if you can possibly find a way that a future interest can vest beyond the period of the Rule, it is void. It’s that simple. It’s the most ridiculous game ever. Oh, and like all good ridiculous legal rules, it can be avoided by just putting in a “savings clause.”
This quarter has been one of the most baffling for my peers and I. On the one hand, we’ve had to go back to reading very carefully for one class. It’s very reminiscent of the days of Civil Procedure. On the other, the collective has never been so lax in practically all other respects. People are literally just biding their time for summer–where, incidentally, most of us will just be working hard for employers instead of BLS.
Other things of interest in my life lately: Pandora has been a bigger part of my life. I finally changed my stations from being single-artist and single-song stations to ones with multiple artists and songs. I’m really happy with the result. Some of my station names: “Rule Against Perpetual Suspensions” is my huge variety station. “Aural Implosions” favors post-rock groups, heavy on chords and light on words. “Mellow Manic” is my attempt to get jam bands in the same mix as classic folkies.
An idea has been thrown around about a few of our bloggers (and at least one who does not currently blog) starting a group blog. I really like the idea. I hope it happens, and I’ve been trying to think of a name for such a project.
I wish that I had some more colorful thoughts for this posting, but I appear to be at a loss. I hope to blog about more personal things this summer. I suspect that there will be a time for that, and I look forward to it. I want my brain back from law school for just a little bit.
One thing just crossed my mind: I have a small MIDI controller that I know I will be able to take with me for my summer adventure. That definitely makes me happy. I will have time for some recreational music. That’s most certainly a good thing.
